Emerging Market Exposure By Investing Locally

With the U.S. economy experiencing two quarters of slowing growth, it's no wonder why investors have become enamored with emerging markets. After all, these nation's feature all the right components - such as double-digit growth rates, exploding populations and vast natural resources - to make them ideal investments for the upcoming decades. Nonetheless, recent accounting and corporate governance issues, high inflation rates, political conflicts and other risks have many investors feeling anxious about direct investment in these markets. For these investors, all is not lost. Plenty of emerging market exposure can be had in your own back yard. (If you are interested in emerging markets, see Re-Evaluating Emerging Markets.)

Investopedia Markets: Explore the best one-stop source for financial news, quotes and insights.

Thinking Locally
For long-term portfolio growth, exposure to developing economies is key. However, gaining that exposure is now easier than just buying a fund like the PowerShares India (NYSE:PIN). As the planet's economy grows ever more interconnected, companies from various developed countries have increasingly looked beyond their own mature economies for bigger growth opportunities abroad. Currently, just over 25% of sales within the S&P 500 now come from these faster-growing emerging markets. That number is growing each quarter and is one of main reasons for the recent double-digit profit growth despite the slowing GDP growth in the United States.

As well as being cheaper on a price-to-earnings metric, developed market stocks benefiting from global growth tend to be lower volatility and are more liquid than those in emerging markets. For example, the total market cap of consumer companies in emerging markets is around $500 billion. This compares to the $4.7 trillion market cap for consumer corporations based in the developed world. In addition, U.S. companies must comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and often have longer operating histories. (To help you with investing, read Equity Valuation In Emerging Markets.)

Bring on the Blue Chips
With the S&P 500 trading at price-to-earnings ratio of only 13, now could be a great time to add some domestic emerging market exposure. Many of the firms that have significant and growing presence in emerging markets are large, steady blue chips. For example, Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO) has almost a 90% hold on the South African soft-drink market. By digging a little deeper into a firm's financial statements and focusing on strong brands, we can find some great investments. Here are some of the top domestic picks to play emerging market growth.

There's no doubt about it, citizens in Asia love to gamble and Las Vegas Sands (NYSE:LVS) could be one of the best ways to tap that love affair. With properties in both Singapore and China's Macau casino region, Sands has seen more than 83% of revenue coming from these properties during the first six months of 2011. The company invested nearly $14 billion into Asia in 2011?and is the only operator that will introduce a new hotel into the Macau market during the next two years. Similarly, Wynn Resorts (Nasdaq:WYNN) has hitched its fortunes to China as well.

With infrastructure spending on the rise for much of the emerging world, firms that provide these products will continue see gains. More than 64% of sales come from outside of North America for dump truck and construction equipment maker Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT). The company saw sales throughout 2011 grow by 39% in Asia and 56% in Latin America. Mining equipment manufacturer Joy Global (Nasdaq:JOYG) has also seen its international star shine.

Finally, emerging market consumers have a growing appetite for American-style fast food. Both Yum! Brands (NYSE:YUM) and McDonald's (NYSE:MCD) have seen their emerging market sales explode over the last few years and coffee giant Starbucks (Nasdaq:SBUX) has plans triple its store count in mainland China to 1,500 locations by 2015.

The Bottom Line
Emerging markets undoubtedly will be the growth engines of the future. For investors, playing that growth doesn't necessary mean direct investment. Some of the best opportunities are in domestic large-cap blue chips with ever-increasing exposure. The previous picks along with consumer products company Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG) are ideal choices. (For more, check out The Risks Of Investing In Emerging Markets.)

Chelsea: Chinese trio line-up for Drogba

Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande are plotting an ambitious bid for Didier Drogba which would make him the world's highest-paid player.

The Chelsea striker is out of contract at the end of the season and hasn't been impressed by the club's offer of a new one-year deal as he wants more security.
Tottenham and AC Milan have been waiting in the wings for some time but the 33-year-old could opt instead for a lucrative switch to the Far-East.
The Super League champions Evergande aren't the only Chinese team interested in signing him, with Shanghai Shenhua also expressing a desire to reunite the Ivory Coast international with Nicolas Anelka.
Dalian Aerbin are very keen as well and have reportedly offered the player a three-year deal worth ?30m or put another way, ?200,000 a week.
However, Evergrande are ready to top even that by paying him in excess of the ?350,000 a week that Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala shell out for Samuel Eto'o.

Google launches YouTube Slam to encourage video discovery (Digital Trends)

cute-slam

Announced within an official blog post earlier today, Google rolled out a method of comparing two videos called YouTube Slam. Designed by a team of developers within Google Research, the video discovery tool places videos into five different?categories?including dance, music,?bizarre, cuteness and comedy. The user clicks a category and launches a new page with two competing YouTube videos. After the user watches both videos, they click the blue voting button underneath one of the videos. If the user chooses the video that?s the most popular among other YouTube users, they receive two points as well as increases the multiplier between votes. If the user chooses the most popular video several times, the?multiplier?continues to double and the amount of points could earn the user a spot on the Slam leaderboard. ?

ctue-slam-winnersOn the leaderboards, users with the most points are shown in the ?Top Voters? list and videos that have gained the most points are listed in the ?Top Videos? section. Users can also modify the ?Top Videos? list by videos chosen last week or over the entire existence of YouTube Slam. Google has also included a ?Play All? feature that launches a continuous stream of the top ten videos for each category. Using a new interface at the bottom of the screen, users can scroll through the entire lineup of videos in addition to shuffling the videos for random play.

Since the launch of the project, the most popular category has been Comedy resulting in over 200,000 votes from approximately 25,000 people. Google plans to roll out new selections each week and the choices are curated by internal employees likely using an?algorithm?to?categorize?each video. With the creation of YouTube Slam, Google hopes to encourage more YouTube users to discover new videos while participating in a game at the same time.?

Bees Appear to Experience Moods

Grumpy? Giddy? According to some measures, bees appear to experience moods. Image: Charles Krebs/Corbis

If you have never watched bees carefully, you are missing out. Look closely as they gently curl and uncoil their mouthparts around food, and you will sense that they are not just eating but enjoying their meal. Watch a bit more, and the hesitant flicks and sags of their antennae seem to convey some kind of emotion. Do those twitches signal annoyance? Or something like enthusiasm?

Whether bees really experience any of these emotions is an open scientific question. It is also an important one, with implications for how we should treat not just bees but the great majority of animals. Recently studies by Melissa Bateson and her colleagues at Newcastle University in England have rekindled the debate over these issues by showing that honeybees may experience something akin to moods.

Using simple behavioral tests, Bate?son?s team showed that honeybees under stress tend to be pessimistic. Other tests have demonstrated that monkeys, dogs and starlings all tend to react similarly under duress and likewise see the proverbial glass as half empty. Although this finding does not?and cannot?prove that bees experience humanlike emotions, it does give pause. We should take seriously the possibility that insects, too, have emotions.

Beeline to the Brain
First, a little bit about bees. They are members of the diverse group of animals lacking backbones?indeed, more than 95 percent of all animal species are invertebrates. Despite the varied and often nuanced behaviors they can exhibit, invertebrates are sometimes regarded as life?s second string, a mindless and unfeeling band of alien critters. If that seems somewhat melodramatic, just consider our willingness to boil some of them alive.

Those judgments tend to arise from arguments about invertebrates? failure to demonstrate the behaviors we usually associate with a pain response. Whereas the yelps and grimaces of other mammals are familiar to us as announcements of hurt, invertebrates can appear to take their injuries in stride. Insects are commonly observed using their crushed limbs with undiminished force when walking, for example, and a locust will reportedly carry on with a meal while it is being eaten by a mantis.

Other attempts to draw a dividing line between creatures that feel and those that do not are rooted in comparative brain anatomy. Invertebrates lack a cortex, an amygdala and many of the other major brain structures routinely implicated in human emotion. Their nervous systems are quite minimalist compared with ours: we have roughly 100,000 bee brains? worth of neurons in our head. Some invertebrates, however, including insects, do possess a rudimentary version of our stress response system. So the question remains: Do they experience emotion in a way that we would recognize, or do they simply react to the world with an elaborate set of reflexes?

To gain some traction on this fascinating question, Bateson?s team followed the lead of recent investigations on ?pessimistic biases? in animals. In humans, the pessimistic bias refers to our well-known tendency to perceive threats or anticipate negative outcomes more frequently when we are feeling anxious or depressed. For example, in tests where people are shown ambiguous statements such as ?the doctor examined little Emily?s growth,? anxious individuals are less likely than others to conclude that Emily is fine and only her height was being checked.

Although the link between bad moods and negative judgments may not be terribly surprising, this correlation is still useful. We rely on it in our daily lives to make informed guesses about how people are feeling by observing their actions and choices. Scientifically, we can use it to study the emotions of creatures unable to tell us directly how they feel. The key here is to set up a controlled situation where animals encounter an ambiguous stimulus?think of it as a nonverbal version of the Emily statement.

San Francisco Year In Review: The Eleven Biggest News Stories Of 2011

The Occupy Wall Street movement began in New York, but after police officers unloaded tear gas, rubber bullets and flash bang grenades on an aggressive crowd of protesters in downtown Oakland on October 25, critically injuring Iraq war veteran Scott Olsen in the process, Occupy Oakland became the epicenter. The following morning, YouTube exploded with videos detailing the chaos, invigorating the movement and outraging the country. Pictures of protesters running through Oakland's smoky streets covered the front pages of every national media outlet. One week later, 10,000 people marched through the city to the Port of Oakland in a general strike and shut down the port.

Meanwhile, across the Bay in San Francisco, the Occupy San Francisco movement was alive and well. What began as a handful of tents in front of the Federal Reserve building soon became an organized encampment at Justin Herman Plaza, complete with social and medical services and tents with mailing addresses. Fortunately for the protesters, the movement coincided with the San Francisco mayoral race, and Occupy San Francisco and the people's right to protest became a hot campaign topic. City supervisors and candidates spent nights protecting the camp from police.

While local support for the Occupy movement faded and the protests and marches dwindled, Oakland is now just beginning to sort through the consequences of the movement. Lawsuits against police brutality are numerous, and two separate petitions for the recall of Mayor Quan have been approved for signature gathering.

Moon & Venus Put On Post-Christmas Sky Show (SPACE.com)

For those still recovering from an active Christmas Day, there will be a celestial sight pretty enough to adorn your Christmas tree on the evening after Christmas.

On Monday (Dec. 26), known as Boxing Day in Commonwealth nations like Canada and the United Kingdom): The brilliant planet Venus will shine prominently in the vicinity of a lovely crescent moon. The Venus-moon sky show repeats on Tuesday night, too.

On Monday, check the south-southwest sky right after the sun sets. Venus will likely catch your eye first since it will be shining about one-fifth of the way up from the horizon. Now look off to the right and at a slightly lower altitude from Venus and you'll also catch sight of the slender sliver of a waxing crescent moon. ?

The eye-catching duo will quickly descend as the sky darkens, finally setting about 2 1/2 hours after sunset, beyond the southwest horizon. The?sky map available here ?shows how Venus and the moon appear on Monday.

A striking sight

This will not be a particularly close conjunction (as groupings of planets are called) since Venus will be hovering about 7 degrees from the moon. Your clenched fist held at arm?s length measures roughly 10 degrees.? Still, the two sky objects will likely attract immediate attention because of their magnificent brightness.

Venus shines at magnitude -4 on the scale astronomers use to measure and object's brightness. On the scale, the lower the magnitude number, the brighter the object appears. On this scale Venus is 11 times brighter than Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky.

The moon will be a little more than two days past new phase and will only be about 6 percent illuminated.? Look for the beautiful phenomenon known as "earthshine" ? sunlight reflected by the Earth, directed toward the moon and dimly illuminating its dark portion with a faint grey-blue glow.? That effect will impart an almost three-dimensional appearance to the moon and will enhance the overall scene.

Venus is currently 123 million miles (197 million kilometers) from the Earth. But the moon is only about 235,000 miles (379,000 km) away and as a result appears to move much more rapidly against the background stars than Venus.?

By the time the sun sets on Tuesday evening, the configuration between Venus and the moon will have markedly changed. In fact, the moon ? whose illuminated sliver will have noticeably widened to 12 percent ? will now be positioned high above Venus. If you drop an imaginary line straight down from the Moon and you will hit Venus some 10 degrees ("one fist") away.?

During the daytime too!

And the moon's proximity relative to Venus will give you an excellent chance to try and glimpse Venus during the daytime.

If your sky is mostly clear with little or no haze, check your south-southwest sky during the late afternoon hours of Monday and Tuesday before sunset and try to locate the moon. It will most likely be easier to do this on Tuesday since the moon will be higher and a thicker crescent.

If you find the moon, remember that on Monday, Venus will be positioned about 7 degrees to the moon's left and will be a bit higher up.? On Tuesday look roughly "one fist" below the moon to find Venus. It will be visible as a tiny white speck of light against the blue sky background.?

Another fine (albeit similarly wide) pairing-off of Venus and moon will again occur a month from now, on Jan. 25 and 26.

If you snap an amazing photo of venus and the moon and would like to share it with SPACE.com, contact managing editor Tariq Malik at?tmalik@space.com.?

'Facebook Queen' extols social media benefits

A WOKING woman is encouraging small businesses to embrace social media in order to help grow their companies in the tough economic climate.

Social media consultant, Beverley Ames-Rooks, who recently appeared on BBC2's Mark Zuckerberg: Inside Facebook programme, hopes to encourage small firms to latch onto the boom in Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

She said that by creating business profiles, companies could quickly increase their online visibility.

Adding that bosses had only recently been fully grasping the potential benefits, Beverley said: "Social media sites have really taken off, businesses are starting to understand the power of it.

"You can create an important, powerful strategy for businesses to get themselves seen. The biggest thing is engaging and interacting with customers.

"What you are looking for is your business to be shown on other people's profiles, otherwise nobody will know you exist."

Beverley, who lives in Old Woking, said social media was particularly useful in the tough financial times as it could be trialled for free without the need to pay up front. She said her company could help to "kickstart a campaign" for a business.

The 'Facebook Queen', as her colleagues at the Social Media Bureau call her, is passionate about her work and was delighted to be able to take part in the BBC2 documentary.

She said: "I was approached back in July, it was a fantastic thing to happen to me. We spent the whole day filming at my home and in Ripley with businesses there."

Beverley is keen to reinforce the point that Facebook and other social media sites are for everyone.

She said: "Facebook is not for just teenagers, it is about targeted advertising and businesses need to be made aware it is not frightening.

"Business often to now know how to utilise it and how to look professional, we hold their hand and kickstart their campaign."

Johnson, Teahan lead No. 12 Kansas over USC 63-47 (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Elijah Johnson scored 14 points, Conner Teahan added 13 and No. 12 Kansas bounced back from a surprising loss to beat Southern Cal 63-47 on Thursday night.

Thomas Robinson had 10 points and nine rebounds, and Tyshawn Taylor added 10 points and nine assists for the Jayhawks (8-3), who suffered an 80-74 home loss to Davidson on Monday.

There would be no upset in this one.

The Jayhawks overcame a sluggish start in their first true road game of the season with a strong defensive effort, forcing 18 turnovers that led to 18 points.

Aaron Fuller scored 19 points for USC (5-8), which shot 34.7 percent from the field.

Neither team was sharp in the early minutes, combining to miss 15 of 21 shots. The Jayhawks' defense eventually wore down USC and they slowly built their lead.

Trailing 10-8, Teahan gave the Jayhawks the lead for good with a 3-pointer from the top of the key. After Byron Wesley made a runner for USC, the Jayhawks closed the half with a 12-1 run.

Elijah Johnson had a steal and layup, Taylor was fouled while making a layup and hit the free throws, and Jeff Withey hit a pair from the line. Robinson then stole the ball at midcourt and drove in for an empathic dunk to make it 22-12.

Teahan hit another 3 as Kansas took a 25-13 lead into halftime.

USC's first half was rather forgettable. The Trojans shot 22.7 percent, settling for mostly for long-range jumpers. They had as many turnovers (13) as they did points.

Robinson, held to four points on four shots in the first half, had a jumper, layup and a dunk on consecutive possessions to extend the lead to 52-30 after halftime, much to the delight of the pro-Kansas crowd.

The Jayhawks had played five games away from Allen Fieldhouse coming in, all on neutral courts.

Jones, USC's top scorer, shot 1 of 7 in the half.

Kansas won its seventh consecutive game in the series.

11 Things You Should Never Put On Your Resume - Business Insider

A new batch of December graduates is getting ready to fly the coop in search for a job and we hope they've already heard the bad news: There are a lot of unemployed people out there.

If the market far exceeds demand, how do you make sure you get past the resume screening process into the interviewing round? By making sure your resume is flawless.

"Somewhere between 95 to 99% of resumes have stuff that shouldn't be on there," Eli Amdur, senior coach and adviser from the Amdur Coaching and Advisory Group, told us. "The general rule is if you put anything on there that distracts the reader from your real accomplishments, then don't do it. Resumes need to be concise and clear."

We've compiled some tips from career experts to make sure your resume steers clear of the trash pile.
