F. Y. I. - The NISB Sports Blog: New Individual Wrestling State Final ...

The Illinois High School Association announced a change to its Individual State Wrestling Tournament structure during its monthly meeting.

More individuals will now qualify for the Class 1A and Class 2A Tournaments. Since 2009, each weight class saw 12 individuals qualify for either tournament. This number will increase to 16, which is currently how many individuals qualify for each weight class in Class 3A.

Fourteen weight classes are contested annually in the State Tournament, meaning an increase of 56 wrestlers will now qualify for this year's tournament.

"Essentially, what we have done is taken the Class 3A tournament format and copied it for Class 1A and Class 2A," stated IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman in a press release. "All of the coaches and individuals were currently arriving at Assembly Hall on Thursday afternoon for skin checks, coaches meetings and mat time for the wrestlers. Being able to expand the number of state final qualifiers, keep the format Class 3A was accustomed to intact and avoid a schedule that would require more missed class time or hotel expenses makes this a win-win format in my mind."

Due to the increase of bouts in the tournament, the festivities will start one day earlier than in the past: Thursday, Friday and Saturday, February 16-18.

Class 3A made up 40 percent of the competing schools in the past three years, with 30 percent in Class 2A and the remaining 30 percent in Class 1A. Due to the change in classification cutoffs implimented over the summer, balancing the tournament brackets were necessary to create a balanced playing field.
