Ins and Outs of Plumbing | Home Improvement

BY: Alan Hobbs

Plumbing is a tradeskill of working with tubing, plumbing fixtures and pipes, for the use of supplying fresh drinking water systems and also the drainage of waste or sewage. Plumbing may also refer to the the pipe system and the plumbing fixtures which are installed in a building for the transportation and distribution of water, and the removal of wastes such as sewage. Plumbing can be distinguished from sewage systems and water systems ie.; a plumbing system can serve just a single building, whereas water and sewage systems will serve a group of buildings such as a town, or city. A plumber is best described as a person who repairs or installs piping systems or such fixtures as water heaters/boilers etc. The plumbing industry is a substantial and very basic part of all developed economies, and this is due to the requirements and needs for clean water, and the removal and collection of wastes.

As already mentioned, plumbing is a tradeskill, and it is possible to learn plumbing skills while on the job.

However, there are qualifications that are recognized in the plumbing industry and are run by City & Guilds. Initially the qualifications that are required are the National Vocational qualification level 2 and level 3. (NVQ)

NVQ 2. If you have two years experience in the plumbing industry and the City and Guilds qualification then you are considered to be a plumber. The NVQ 2 covers water, sanitation and drainage and will take around two years to complete. Courses are usually day release, full time, or can be carried out in the evenings. With an NVQ 3 another two years should be added to cover system design, gas, unvented systems and water regulations.

If you can afford it, some colleges run a fast track NVQ2 which will take only one year.

The job of a plumber is to maintain, repair, and install water supplies and a variety of sanitation and waste disposal systems in commercial and domestic premises. A plumber is required to work with diagrams and plans, and all the operations should be in strict compliance with building regulations. Good physical fitness and problem solving along with a methodical approach to handling a job, and because some outdoor work is usually required, a good head for heights is essential.

A typical everyday plumbing job may include any of the following :

Washing machine installation : Sink and taps installation : Bathroom fixtures such as bath, shower, sink, flush toilet and cistern.

Plumbers are very often called out for much needed or emergency repairs. It is worth remembering that leaks should be fixed immediately as they can quite rapidly develop into a more serious problem. Temporary repairs are only temporary and wrapping the pipe usually fails. If a fixture is leaking then the shutoff valve for that device should be turned off. The leak should be located and any fittings tightened as a quarter or half turn may solve the problem, care should be taken not to overtighten the fittings. If this process fails to solve the problem, then expert advice should be sought.
