Mayor, police chief shot and wounded in Venezuela (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuelan authorities say the mayor of a small town in eastern Venezuela has been wounded in a shooting along with the local police chief.

Prosecutors say Pariaguan Mayor Tomas Bello was driving through the nearby town of El Tigre along with police chief Jose Oraste at the time of Monday night's attack.

Authorities say the two were intercepted by armed men in a car who got out and began firing at the mayor's Jeep.

Officials said in a statement Tuesday that Oraste fired back but was wounded by two bullets. It said the mayor suffered four bullet wounds.

The attackers fled and set fire to their car before abandoning it. The motive of the attack was unclear.
